Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is out with this week’s latest edition of his Power On newsletter, in which he suggests that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will both feature always-on Lock Screen displays to show information to the user—similar to newer Apple Watches.

Gurman suggests that iOS 16 will build in future support for an always-on lock screen, something the iPhone maker was reportedly planning for the iPhone 13.

The report claims that Apple’s internal code names for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are D73 and D74.

“I’m told iOS 16 builds in future support for an always-on lock screen, something Apple was originally planning for last year’s iPhone 13,” says Gurman. “This would allow the iPhone to turn down the frame rate significantly on the lock screen and display quickly glanceable information—similar to newer Apple Watches.”

“I’m told to expect the always-on mode as an exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models, codenamed D73 and D74, if the feature ends up making the cut. As I’ve discussed previously, other iPhone 14 Pro features include a new front-facing camera and Face ID cutout, an A16 chip and a 48-megapixel back camera. There’s also the possibility of sending emergency texts over satellite networks.”

Last month we saw alleged real-world iPhone 14 display panels leak online, showing the rumored pill-shape and circular display cutouts, which will replace the traditional notch to house the front-facing camera and Face ID system on this year’s new “Pro” iPhone models.

Last week YouTuber and leaker Jon Prosser shared a set of concept images showing us what the iPhone 14 Pro will probably look like, featuring the rumored pill-shape and circular display cutouts, new purple finish, and more.
